Why Patagonia?

Visitors to the famous lake and river region of Patagonia, Argentina walk around with their mouths open, constantly muttering things like, "unbelievable," "awesome," "breathtaking" and just plain "wow." And that's before they make their first cast. For over one hundred years, this place has been a well-kept secret. Just now being discovered, totally secluded and remarkably pristine, this area resembles British Columbia, Jackson Hole, Telluride and the Swiss Alps all rolled up in one. The fishing is reminiscent of Montana and New Zealand BEFORE people arrived. It is spectacular. The water everywhere is clean and clear, and whether you're flyfishing, or just sitting and looking out on miles and miles of lakes, waterfalls and rivers that are so incredibly clean, you probably won't see another soul all day long.

Butch Cassidy of the Cool Gang fame hid out here (and even built a line cabin on the ranch) at the turn of the century, and had this to say about the region. Even though his description is almost a hundred years old, little has changed.

"Dear Friend.....I visited the best cities and best parts of South America til I got here. And this part of the country looked so good that I located and I think for good, for I like the place better every day.....the country is first class and it can't be beat, for I have never seen finer grass country, and lots of it hundreds and hundreds of miles unsettled and comparatively unknown, and ...right at the foot of the Andes Mountains.....there is plenty of good land along the mountains for all the people that will be here for the next hundred years....the summers are beautiful...and grass knee high everywhere and lots of good cold mountain water...". Butch Cassidy, Argentina August 10, 1902.
